My name is Rich Gardner. I’m a personal trainer with 8 years’ experience.
Before my career as a personal trainer, I played professional football for the Tennessee Titans & Seattle Seahawks. I was drafted 3rd round via Penn State where I graduated with a degree in economics – I also finished with 3rd team All American honors.
My professional football career extends to Germany where I signed with Kiel Hurricanes as a player and defensive coach of their junior team. I helped the Kiel Hurricanes win their first German Bowl and coached their junior team to an undefeated season.
I retired shortly after, and began my career as a personal trainer with the idea of a smooth transition into the professional world. I worked two years at La Boxing (now UFC Gym) and Fitness Formula Clubs before starting my own company with a socially driven mission.
During my journey as an independent trainer with a focus of providing health & wellness in under resourced communities – I had the opportunity to work with schools, student athletes, professional athletes & general population clients throughout Chicago and Chicagoland areas.
My experience working within these demographics inspired me to further my socially driven initiative to the nonprofit world.
In November 2017, my wife and I founded Maroon Village (501c3). Our mission is to promote resiliency among student athletes through performance training & yoga. We have partnerships with several organizations that align with our mission –which includes Healthy Hood, Hyde Park Neighborhood Club, After School Matters and GoDeep Football.
My background allows me to take these experiences and creatively mold into an organic program that caters to the individual. I’m looking forward to taking this journey with you.

I have been a personal trainer since graduating from Illinois State University with a Bachelors in Exercise Science in 2012. I began training athletes, both prep and pro, in Florida at the Institute of Human Performance before moving back to Chicago. Health and fitness has been my passion since high school football and I have competed in bodybuilding, powerlifting, and strongman competitions. I hold the NSCA personal trainer cert, am a Level 1 Precision Nutrition Nutritionist, and hold several other specialized certifications as well. I believe in a well rounded and long term approach to health and fitness and encourage my clients to set multiple smaller, attainable goals to eventually reach their full potential.

As a lifelong athlete and science enthusiast, I received a B.S. in Biology & English writing from DePauw University, where I also fell into the health & fitness world. Four years later I'm not only a trainer but a certified Sports Nutritionist as well, and I have aspirations to obtain my PhD in nutritional science someday. I've also worked at LiveLeanRx as a DEXA Body Comp. & Metabolic Technician. I believe trainers must walk the walk if they dare talk the talk, so I'm also a nationally qualified competitive bodybuilder, nationally qualified strong(wo)man, and an elite level raw powerlifter. I was born in San Francisco and grew up running, biking, rowing wrestling and skiing (thanks largely to my father, the kind of guy who gets up at 5 a.m. to go rowing.) When I graduated from UCSB with a degree in English Literature I began to become more involved with boxing, muay-thai kickboxing and jiu-jitsu. All of these martial arts required high-levels of physical fitness to be competitive in, so I set-about learning the basics of strength conditioning. My goals in weight-training were never of an aesthetic nature so it was hard for me to imagine becoming a personal trainer, an industry I felt was, and is, dominated by vanity. But as more and more friends came to me for advice I realized I had a talent for explaining the principles of fitness in simple terms and helping people really improve their lives. When I moved to Chicago I received my NASM-CPT training certification and began working with a wide range of personal training clients. Some wanted to look better, some wanted to move better, some wanted to heal from injuries and each one succeeded with my help. I never saw myself in an industry so dominated by fads and hype, but by offering my clients real solutions to real problems and giving down-to-earth guidance for reaching clear goals, I found myself not only in this industry, but happy and thriving in it. I can’t think of anything I’d rather get up in the morning and do.

Anthony was intrigued early on, with the human body’s ability to perform amazing feats and the high level of physical performance and conditioning that can be achieved through proper training. He started researching and studying anatomy, workout design, and nutrition at the age of 12. Health and Fitness isn’t just what we do in the gym, with a trainer or on our own. It’s also how we live our every day lives to help maximise our results, from our hard work.
We need to put ourselves in the right environment, around the right people to help inspire and motivate ourselves to get the most out of life.
Training, is so much more than just lifting weights, running sprints or doing sit-ups. We need to also train the most important part of ourselves, that controls everything we do. Our mind! Controlling our mind can be difficult for some. I’ve also had to battle the demon inside my head that would say, “Lets stay home and watch Game of Thrones instead of training” or “Its too cold outside to train." Or the one I find the most difficult, “Lets eat a deep dish pizza instead of cooking a healthy meal." (Chicago has too many great restaurants). We all have been there and sometimes it can be hard to climb out of the hole we find ourselves in. I’m not just talking about fitness related either, it could also be the feeling of “where is my life headed?”
One of my favorite quotes from an old Samurai warrior, Miyamoto Musashi: “Know one thing, to know another”. Meaning, if we could really apply ourself through hard work in the gym, we can apply that philosophy in our every day life. Control our MIND. Train our BODY. Strengthen our SPIRT! Health and Fitness is my passion and has been for 25 years. Let me motivate you to reach your goals!
